Bearing Capacity of Shallow Footings

Watch Video

Allowable bearing capacity should satisfy both shear failure and settlement criterion. PEYSANJ uses Hansen formulas for analysis of shear failure of soil with considering the effect of ground water table in bearing capacity. For settlement analysis, Steinbrenner and Goodier (Timoshenko) and rigid foundation formulas are used for immediate (elastic) settlement and one-dimensional Terzaghi consolidation formula is used for consolidation settlement.

Total settlement of the footing is then calculated by summing up the elastic and consolidation settlements. For each footing size, the minimum values of allowable stresses for shear failure and settlement criteria are compared and the minimum value will be chosen as the "Allowable Bearing Capacity" of the footing. The concept is illustrated below:

The main features covered in Bearing Capacity module of PEYSANJ are listed here:

4 Supporting Pad, Strip and Spread (mat) footings
4 Supporting multi-layer soil stratigraphy
4 Calculating weighted average soil parameters for settlement and shear failure analysis
4 Calculating depth of influence for settlement analysis based on 2 criteria (percentage of applied stress, and percentage of overburden stress)
4 Calculating depth of influence for shear failure analysis based on F of soil layers
4 Effect of ground water level in bearing capacity
4 Option for ignoring the elastic settlement when consolidation settlement occurs
4 Unsaturated consolidation settlement by applying a coefficient to the total consolidation settlement
4 Effect of rigidity of the footing on total settlement
4 Effect of unloading / reloading on settlement reduction (for cases of excavation and placement of footing in depth)
4 Allowable settlement can be set by user
4 Options for accuracy of settlement and shear failure calculations (as accurate as ds=1 kPa for loops)
4 Print preview and calculation details report
4 Export results to Microsoft Excel and image formats
